Learn How to Cover Your Outdoor Patio Cushions with These Tutorials

“Do you think it’s time to upgrade your patio furniture? There’s a summer sale going on right now!”

If you’re contemplating upgrading your patio furniture and think that your cushions have worn out, you’re probably shopping around for new ones.

Obviously, you can do that – but that’s an expensive option.

What if we told you that you can recover your outdoor patio cushions – in a way that they feel fresh and comfortable?

Yes – you can do that.

And that’s what we’ll be talking about in this tutorial.

Throughout this post, allow us to show you how to recover your outdoor patio cushions with ease.

The Right Way to Recover Your Outdoor Patio Cushion

There’s no one right way to recover your outdoor patio cushion. There are many. Throughout this blog post, we’ll be talking about two ways to recover your outdoor patio cushion.

So, let’s go:

  • Using Hot Glue
  • Using Safety Pins

Let’s look at each of these cushion-savior hacks one by one.

Using Hot Glue

You can easily recover your outdoor patio cushions by replacing the old cushion covers and installing a new one using hot glue.

Now, we would advise you to select an outdoor fabric or canvas that is durable. Cut the fabric with the right measurements.

To do it, flip the fabric inside-out. Make sure that the inside-out side is facing you. Based on the measurements of the cushion, draw a rectangle or square and cut the fabric using scissors.

Make sure that the fabric you are using is weather-resistant. If unable to find one, you can always use a tough one like canvas. On the wrong side of the fabric, place the cushion at the top. Make sure that the cushion is at the center. Now, you need to fold the top edge of your cushion’s fabric to the top edge of the cushion. Use hot glue at the back of the cushion. And repeat the same step for the bottom edge.

Next, you also need to fold the side edges of the fabric you’re using. Find both top and bottom edges on the left side of the cushion and fold them such that you get a trapezoidal or triangular flap. And repeat the same for the right side. Now you need to use hot glue for both the flaps. And once done, remove any threads before using the cushion.

Using Safety Pins

The first thing you need to do is to remove your old cover – if you plan on washing and using it. Or you can just keep it on. But if you do, it’s important to note that the hot glue we’ll be using will mostly damage your cover.

We’d advise you to choose an outdoor fabric or canvas that’s durable. And cut the fabric – with the right measurements. You can do this by flipping it on the wrong side – such that the wrong side is facing you. Now, based on the measurements of the cushion, draw a rectangle or square and cut the fabric using scissors.

Next, bring in the cushion and center it such that it’s in the middle of the fabric. You need to place the cushion on top of the fabric.

With the cushion in the center, you need to wrap the fabric’s top edge onto the cushion’s underside. And as you do, safety pin edges of the fabric to the patio cushion.

Repeat the same step for the bottom edge. While putting safety pins, make sure that you are putting them a few centimeters or inches apart.

While you’ve done it from the middle, you also need to fold the side edges of the fabric that you are using. First, we’ll do it for the left side and then the right. So, to fold the side edges of the left side, you need to find both the bottom and top edges and fold them such that you get a trapezoidal or triangular flap.

Secure it with safety pins. Now, repeat the same for the right side. It’s similar to how you usually wrap a present. You’ll require one safety pin, at the very least, across the diagonal edges of the flap. In case the cushion is large, you may require more. It depends on the size of the cushion.

And that’s how you can use safety pins to recover your outdoor patio cushions.

Either you can use hot glue, or you can safety pins. You may also sew a new cushion cover. As we told you, there are numerous ways of recovering a cushion cover, but our advice would be to reach out to experts who can professionally help you out.
